Thailand - Southern Beaches

January 10, 2008 13:57 by Jan

Town of Ranong, staying a funky little place called the TV Bar, where you don't watch TV, you sit on them, and the loudest guesthouse ever, all for 100 baht, that's just over 1 pound. Easy day off, ATM, 7/11, internet cafe all within spitting distance. Money saved spent on a good food and beer, and an interesting town with Burmese and Chinese influence. Few tourists here though, more a travel hub. More...

Thailand - Moneky Magic

December 29, 2007 14:40 by Jan

Set off from Siam Reap, hoping to get close to the Thai border by the day's end. Was going to be tough, heard so much about this next section of road; pot holes big enough for cars, face masks to counteract dust, many other riders blogs mention taking a pickup truck instead. All psyched up for a groovy dirt ride, but the road was only moderately bad, having been repaired a few years back. So, a pleasant ride in the sand & gravel, and fortunate that the wind blew dust from passing trucks away from my 'cycle lane'. More...

February 1, 2005 08:00 by jan

image Hope you're all well in cool blighty, land of warm beer... Mid-day bike riding is so hot here, have taken to napping on the road-side when find some shade... fave re-hydration technique, licking ice lollies on whilst cycling

Stopped 2 days in Kemmerat, stayed with family, have a bamboo hut on the banks of the Mekong river, watching the river life, had lunch with relatives, punching the air with delight as i consumed each chilli, and the bamboo soup was very tasty, much better than it sounds. More...

Thai Job Offer

June 26, 2004 16:01 by jan

Well, originally set off on cycling tour of Thailand, unexpectedly returned back to Chang Mai for a few meetings with the MD of a local software computer company, and have now been offered job. Same skills as present career job, new country....

Nice to have a choice, offered an alternative... and maybe thats all this is, been good fun to look around, talk to the MD, be picked at the hotel lobby by the driver, and generally acting like a tart! but would be mad to turn it down straight away. Hard to give up existing good job in england, not easy to return if do this... Holiday in paradise one thing, work in paradise be careful! More...

Thailand - Nong Khai

March 19, 2001 16:03 by jan

welcome_thai We've crossed from Vientiane (Laos) back into Nong Khai (Thailand) and have a night-train to Bangkok in a couple of hours - and onto a breach resort - Kosamet maybe, south of Bonkers

Found a KFC, double helpings of western junk food got rid of crave - Lao food has been great - Vientiane was civilized, lots of colonial french influence and 'Arc de Triumph' as in Paris - wooden shacks on stilts over the Mekong river - atmospheric stuff - loads more 'wats' (temples), we're all templed out.

Last nights water buffalo steak was pretty good Cycled past the Beer-lao Factory, couldn't resist dropping in for a look around, so much beer has been consumed by everyone else these last 2 weeks in Lao

Very hot previous 2 days cycling - today is pleasantly cool and overcast - about 30 degrees - so just chilling out drinking the local brew on the banks of the Mekong river, waiting for a train...

Thailand - Golden Triangle

March 6, 2001 13:47 by jan

3pm here in Chiang Khong where the ferry leaves from Thailand to Laos, across the Mekong River. Today has been riding southwards along the banks of the Mekong, great mountain views into Laos, passing through beautiful villages, buying cool drinks at sleepy open-air stools, trying to re-hydrate.

Going to boat across the river this afternoon into Laos, find somewhere to stay with cold beers and organise a river boat downstream for tomorrow.

Went to Golden Triangle yesterday where Laos, Burma and Thailand meet at the joining of 2 rivers. Amazed to find the blue rinse brigade there!

Been getting up at 6am to avoid riding too much in the heat of midday - incredibly hot and sunny here, especially riding bike uphill, yum yum, sunblock factor 35, I'd really like some snow tomorrow, not. So lucky in England with he cold grey rain.

Electricity supply has failed once while writing this email.... May not find another internet cafe for a while since Laos is more of the beaten train, going to be remote. I hear the sticky rice is good, better get stocked up before we cross, how much toilet paper do we need?
